Everyone Is Using AI in School. Almost No One Was Trained.
Microsoft's 2026 AI in Education report shows 88% of educators and 92% of students and leaders have used AI for school. It also shows most were never trained.

Microsoft's third annual AI in Education report, published June 24, 2026, is based on research from PSB Insights with 3,345 respondents across K–12 and higher education in six countries: the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, Japan, and Saudi Arabia.
The adoption numbers are no longer surprising:
- 92% of students and education leaders have used AI for school purposes.
- 88% of educators have used it for school-related activities.
- 58% of education leaders say their schools are implementing or scaling AI.
- 78% of leaders, 76% of educators, and 65% of students increased their AI use in the past year.
The training numbers are the story:
- 77% of students and 53% of educators have no formal AI training.
- 66% of educators and 52% of students want monthly or quarterly AI training.
- The leading concern for both groups is academic integrity: 41% of students and 42% of educators.
A later Microsoft Education write-up of the same research adds another gap: about four in five education leaders rate their institution's AI guidance as clear, yet only about half of students and teachers say that guidance was provided at all.
Adoption without training is not transformation. It is diffusion.
Why "training" is the wrong frame
When schools hear "AI training," they usually picture a workshop on prompting.
That is not what the gap is.
A teacher who learns to write better prompts gets better worksheets. That is fine. It does not change the two problems that actually shape outcomes: knowing what each student misunderstands, and knowing what to teach next.
Consider what the same survey says people are worried about. The top concern is academic integrity, which is another way of saying: we can no longer trust the output of student work as evidence of student learning.
No prompting workshop fixes that.
This is the same story Gallup told for U.S. teachers: 18% receive formal guidance, and the rest improvise.
The training that would actually matter
If a school could train teachers on one thing, it should be this: how to read evidence of learning at the level of the misconception.
A unit score of 62% is not evidence. It is a summary.
Evidence looks like: this student can multiply fractions but fails when denominators differ; that student reads fluently but cannot locate supporting details; these four students all misapplied integer rules inside a multistep expression.
Most teachers can do this analysis for one student. Almost none can do it for 28 students, every week, on top of a 49-hour workweek (RAND, 2025) with 53% already reporting burnout.
That is not only a training gap. It is a capacity gap. And capacity gaps are what infrastructure is for.
Put the AI where the capacity gap is
The Microsoft report finds people are adopting AI fastest for the tasks closest to them: drafting, planning, content. Those are the tasks with the smallest instructional payoff.
The largest payoff sits one layer deeper, in the loop between assessment and instruction:
Plan → Teach → Diagnose → Verify.

When a school's evidence of learning comes from in-class assessment, diagnosed to the misconception and verified by reteach, the academic integrity problem shrinks on its own.
It does not matter as much whether a homework answer came from a chatbot. The school knows, independently, what the student can do. That knowledge is the real defense.
The takeaway
Near-universal adoption and missing formal training is a recipe for a lot of activity and very little insight.
The fix is not more workshops on how to talk to AI. It is infrastructure that gives teachers what they have been asking for since before AI existed: a clear, fast answer to "what does this student actually understand, and what do I teach next?"
